Regional Aid (AFR)
Regional aid areas (AFR or ZAFR areas) stem from the European Union’s desire to involve public authorities more closely in the economic development of regions facing difficulties. Regional aid offers businesses the opportunity to benefit from grants for productive investments or for the creation of jobs linked to such investments.
Aid granted by central government or local authorities to businesses based in AFR areas may cover:
- The costs of investment in land, equipment, premises or intangible assets (e.g. patents),
- The wage costs of the jobs created, over a period of two years.

Eligible companies are primarily SMEs with fewer than 250 employees. Only permanent jobs under permanent contracts or fixed-term contracts of more than six months are eligible, and the threshold for triggering the scheme is set at the creation of three jobs. The DIRRECTE services monitor companies that have applied for these funds throughout the duration of the agreement to ensure that the jobs are actually created. Grants are only released once the jobs in question have actually been created.
