Castilla-La Mancha: A Cornerstone of Bioenergy in Spain
The region of Castilla-La Mancha has emerged as a pivotal player in Spain's renewable energy landscape, securing its position as the third-largest autonomous region dedicated to this cause. Boasting a total installed renewable energy capacity of 9,721 megawatts, equivalent to 14% of the national total, Castilla-La Mancha is prominently fueled by two major sources: wind and photovoltaic energy. As of the close of 2021, an impressive 77.5% of the region's energy production harnessed the power of natural resources.
In a noteworthy achievement in 2022, Castilla-La Mancha witnessed a remarkable 63% of its total electricity generation sourced from renewable outlets. This steadfast commitment underscores the region's resolve to propel advancements in bioenergy and actively support businesses establishing themselves within its borders to seamlessly embrace this eco-friendly transition through diverse collaborative initiatives.
The National Hydrogen Center (CNH2) in Castilla-La Mancha: A Hub of Excellence for Green Hydrogen and Sustainable Development
At the heart of Castilla-La Mancha lies the National Hydrogen Center (Centro Nacional del Hidrogeno, CNH2), a collaborative venture involving local enterprises Ibderdrola and Fertiberia. This center serves as a tangible embodiment of the collective dedication of local and international businesses toward ushering in the green hydrogen revolution.
The CNH2 stands as a proponent for scientific and technological research in the expansive field of hydrogen and fuel cells, overseeing the entire value chain. Serving as a catalyst, it fosters fruitful collaborations between public and private entities. The center actively formulates plans, programs, and sustainable development strategies, promoting cooperation with Spanish and European associations and clusters. Additionally, it identifies strategic projects aimed at elevating the competitiveness of the regional industry while actively contributing to job creation within the green energy sector.
Castilla-La Mancha: A Hub for Innovation and Collaboration in Green Energies
In pursuit of these initiatives, the region collaborates closely with several distinguished companies, including Cojali, Iberdrola, Repsol, Cummins, Cobra, FM Logistic, Adix, Tecnove, and Zirtando Innovacion.
Iberdrola, a prominent figure in green hydrogen production for industrial use in Europe, oversees a 100-megawatt photovoltaic solar plant and operates one of the world's largest electrolysis-based hydrogen production systems (20 megawatts).
Repsol has successfully developed a comprehensive green hydrogen value chain, including a biogas plant, while actively exploring photoelectrocatalysis technology with support from CNH2 and various clusters.
Cummins, playing its role, has erected a cutting-edge facility spanning 20,000 square meters. This facility is exclusively dedicated to the assembly and testing of electrolyzers, contributing a substantial 500 megawatts annually.
Castilla-La Mancha assumes a pivotal role in Spain's bioenergy sector, and its unwavering commitment positively influences businesses that have chosen to establish themselves in the region, actively contributing to the evolution of tomorrow's green technologies.
